I got a 55 gallon along with all the essentials for Christmas. I didn't know much about taking care of a tank so I went online to do some research and i found out about the cycling process. Well I did this and a little more than a month ago it completed

Nitrites: 20
Nitrates: 0
Ammonia: 0
pH: 7
Temp: 78
Water change: 20% weekly

Anyway I have been researching fish too, and I can't really decide on anything other than a dwarf gourami ( I just like the way they look). I'm open to all suugestions and options. Oh and my tank has driftwood and rocks and many caves, as well as a bunch of fake plants.

Thank you

Start off with the gourami you have picked out. find out its tank mates before you decide on a bad choice.

see if you like any of those your closer to your dream tank..

you will get 40 different answers, i say do some looking at pictures and reading on the net and decide for yourself.

you're doing the right thing taking your time. corys are a sure bet for the bottom. buy a flight of four or five. read up on temperature and water requirements. read up on the disposition of the fish as well. good luck.

My favorites are dwarf south american cichlids. You get all the interesting behavior of their larger African cousins, but you can house them in a community set up, and they will not tear up plants.

Cheaper ones $5-10
Bolivian rams=Microgeophagus altispinosa, or Keyhole cichlids

More expensive $15-20, but in my opinion way more interesting (and profitable if it gets to that) are the Apostogramma genus (A. cacatuoides is a good one to start with, and they can tolerate and will breed in harder more neutral water than some other Apistos) In a 55g you could house a male and several females

Stay away from German Blue Rams, they are very delicate, and good specimans are hard to find

ps I wish I had your problem
