I've got a Kennyi that looks like a male, but I can't be sure. (I know this should be easy...)

His color varies from a muted yellow-grey to a yellow-tinged light blue, depending on time and lighting. He's more vivid when the sun's shining in the tank then when he's just under the hood lights. He has black vertical stripes, almost just like the female--perhaps just a bit thicker.

I'm confused because I don't see an eggspot on the anal fin. He also doesn't look like the male Kennyi's I've seen in photos; he's not nearly that bright, and his stripes are much more pronounced.

I've read that females sometimes take on male coloration. Is it possible that this fish is a female? Do males invariably have eggspots?

Thanks for any advice.

How old is this fish? He could be in transistion.... turning form blue to yellow.

Sometimes females take on male coloration (slightly). THe best way to find out for sure is to see it holding (then its a female) or vent it, but even venting can be inaccurate.

I've only had these fish about a month, so I couldn't say the exact age.

The yellowish Kennyi is about 1.5". Our other Kennyi is 2", and looks exactly like a female except that she's starting to get a single yellow eggspot on her anal fin.

Venting probably wouldn't tell me much, as I've never tried it before--and I can't imagine that the fish would enjoy my learning on them. Better to be patient and see how they color out, I guess.
