I added pieces of driftwood and bogwood to my 15g today.

For some reason the Neons stopped shoaling like they used to. It has turned into a territory brawl of sorts. The more I watch this behaviour I'm inclined to think that they are beginning to pair off. I don't understand why the addition of the wood made a difference.

Maybe it's just temporary.

they are probably just getting adjusted, but I also thought I have read that driftwood can change your ph. it wouldn't hurt to make sure all of your water conditions are in line :)

driftwood can make water softer, but if anything it should be a good thing for the neons who live in the very soft waters of the Amazon in the wild. Ive never heard of neons fighting of pairing off, if they are pairing off like angels do (?!) then id just sit back and watch to see how it'l turn out. That is unless some of them risk dieing of stress or something...

also how many neons do you have in the 15 and do they have room to hide?

I have nine Neons and a Golden Veil Angel in the 15g. There are many hiding places among/below the two pieces of wood and the two rocks in there. I have no idea of their mating behavior other than that they are probably egg-layers.

Just peeked in and it's looking more and more like pre-spawn behavior. I'll keep you updated.

Today before work I had a chance to sit and watch for awhile.

There were two sets that seemed to be doing synchronized swimming with the Neon above leading. When other Neons came close they were chased away by one or the other.

Still waiting to see if they spawn. With as much as I'm at work I probably won't see anything until the fry show up. Lucky they now have a place to hide among the wood.

I do need to get a Pleco to eat/clean/polish the new piece of bogwood. It is pretty spongy. I'll see about taking some pics tonight since the tank cleared up a bit from adding the bogwood.

I dont know about the mating rituals of neons, but considering that driftwood is good for neons, and how they are acting, it sounds promiceing.
I DO no that neons are supposed to be hard to breed.
I have heard that they eat their fry and eggs, so look out and have a spot ready in another tank
