Is there a better/cheaper/longer lasting alternatives then using Carbon/ammonia medium? My Fluval 404 has BIOMax rings and i am wondering whether i should make more room for them than for the carbon.

I am old school so i am just following the instructions from Fluval. But many people in this forum think that running Carbon is just a waste of money. Many favor BIOMAX rings.

i only have 3 big goldfish in the tank. They survive even after 4 months of no-water change (then again i have a big tank).

Well first off I would start to do water changes every week. get used to weekly 50% water changes to keep those goldfish healthy.

If this is an established tank then there is no reason to use an ammonia medium. If you are having ammonia spikes then there is a problem, probably lack of water changes. If you are not having ammonia spikes then save your money. The same goes for carbon. Unless there is something you want to remove there is no reason to use it. Buy some more biorings or some sponges and use them instead.
