I want to set up a small eclipse tank (the kind that has a filter that sits above the tank) and I have some how managed to loose the strainer that was on the intake tube. I have one of those spongey algae scrubbers and I was curious as to whether or not I could stick that on the end of the intake tube instead of going out and buying a new strainer. I want to use the tank for snails to feed to my future puffers.

doesn't anyone know?

aww...c'mon guys...

I use a pre filter sort of like your discribing on an aqua clear filter to keep the sand from going into the filter.I use a filter that is designed to fit on the intake of a Supreme filter, but you should be able to find something smaller that will fit and it will also give you extra biological filtration.

I would put it on the outside of the tube and then keep it there with a rubber band doubled over a couple of times. If you can get your hands on cheep course filter sponge and dig out a small indentation in the middle that would work to. Again use a ruber band to secure it to the tube. Might be unsightly but you said you are going to use it as a breeder for snails.

I've stuck the sponge on the end of the intake to see if it would fit and it does fit. there was already a small hole in the bottom and I just stretch that out a little bit. Its really snug on the intake so I don't think that it'll be going anywhere.
