I believe , not entirely sure, that Brasil issued a ban on the exportation of L046 because continued fishing will most likely result in extinction. You usually have to get them from breeders, thus the high prices. There is a LFS in my area that can get them for me, but I have absolutely no interest in them. IMO, there are alot better plecos out there for alot better prices.

Archangel you are correct. It is illegal now for Brasilian exporters to export them from there country.

If you kick around the catfish specialist sites there are usually juveniles for sale, but don't expect a bargain.

They are somewhat uncommon to rare and due to habitat destruction and over-collection, they may become extinct in the wild (controversial subject).
There are reports that the Brasilian government has or is banning the exportation of these fish, I've not seen documentation of this yet.
Best done as a species tank, and if your going to keep them please do the world a favor and breed them, literally you may be doing the world a favor if they do become extinct in the wild.
Best breeding groups are one male and 3-4 females in a riverine habitat with lots of breeding sites.
Excellent info available at PLanetcatfish and Plecofanatics
Please thouroghly research these beautiful fish before buying, these are not ordinary plecs. One big difference is that these little guys prefer meaty diets, they don't do algae.

I don't think they are worth the money, people want just cause they are rare.
