Just got a small (10 gallon) tank for my room, I'm trying out the "natural" look.

What do you think will be happy in it? I'm planning on getting 5 neon tetras, what else would be a nice fit? I also want one algea eater, any recommendations? thanks.

Very pretty tank !

I can see a betta gliding around in that tank.....don't grab the first one you see, that tank needs bright, unusually colored betta. He would make a very nice centerpiece fish for that tank. Find out when the store gets them in and go the day they come if you can. The nicest ones usually go first....only thing, is I'm not sure how bettas and neon tetras get along though....might want to check that out first.

I agree with EMG, throw a nice Betta in there to brighten it up. And BTW I have 50 neons with my Betta and he doesn't even look at them unless they steal his food.

If you want a showpiece fish, dwarf gourami or a betta. For algae control a couple of Otocinculus catfish will do the trick, but I'd let the tank mature a bit before I added them. For schooling fish, if you like neons might I suggest cardinal tetras instead? They seem a bit hardier these days to me and look almost the same. Or, for other schooling options, pygmy cory cats are fantastic if you can find them or get your LFS to order them. They'll swim more than their larger cousins and occupy the middle and bottom stratas af the tank. If you do get a school of either cories or cardinals (or neons for that matter) 6 is a good number. Beuatiful tank BTW. Congrats.

That tank looks amazingly like one of my 1st set-ups...I had those same lock-rocks too. ;)I think a group of 5-6 cherry barbs and some pygmy cories or otos would look cool.

A couple panda cories, some black neons, a black swordtail, and an otto.

the black neons would look SOOOOO good in there... I dunno how readily available the black swords are, but they'd look really good too.

Nice tank... Where did you get the rocks?

Oh... I think some dwarf gouramis would look nice in there...

That is a VERY beautiful tank! :D

I agree that a male betta and some small tetras, and a small cleanup crew would be a good setup!

Maybe for your 10 gallon you could maybe try this:

1 male betta

6 Black Neon Tetras (no they are NOT related to the Neon Tetra)

1 Apple or Mystery Snail

3 or 4 Otos

5 Corydoras Catfish

yep, thats a pretty tank. I could imagine a pair of Rams in there. :)

Ah yes...rams...lol...very pretty fish...but, just how many fish can you put in a 10 gallon tank? Some of those suggestions seem a bit much to me, but....but I'm no expert !

Oh, one thing I didn't consider as far as the betta goes....they generally don't do well with plastic plants....the edges can tear thier fins...but at the same time I have 2 bettas that have been in a tank with plastic plants since I first bought them...(they were my first betta and I didn't know better then)...the rest of the gang had to go to live or silk..kept ruining thier fins when they swam through the plastic ones....so, just a thought....something to consider... :)

A pair of them... that's it.

Rams are a little delicate though, so I wouldn't go with them unless you are willing to keep up with pristine water quality.

I haven't found rams to be very difficult..lol..even though I have read alot that they are. But you do want to be sure they don't have cammallanus nematodes if you buy them !!

I do however, keep my tanks very clean...couple water changes a week...
