Hello,

I've posted here before regarding siphoning deep into the gravel, and the answer that I got was that it was okay to do so. However, this was before I got an undergravel filter, which is supposed to create a baterical colony. Therefore, is it still okay to siphon deep into the bottom? Some people say that doing so will kill the bacteria, and others say no...what do you think?

Full depth vacuuming is very important in keeping up UGs. Vacuuming does not distrurb nitrification bacteria at all in a well maintained substrate, they are very well attached. If they were not, fluidized bed filters could not work - and they do, while being tumbled in the current 24/7/365.
