I went to see my friendly neighborhood LFS today. I wanted some java moss, but they only had some scruffy pieces attatched to wood for ten bucks
I saw a guy I do business with alot and told him I wanted some java moss, but they only had scrappy pieces. Welllllllll, he went through all the display tanks collected out a big bunch of it and sold it to me for 4 bucks.

Moral is: get to know your LFS people, don't hassle them, and be regular in your visits, and they'll treat you really nice.

Question: Can I save the remainder of the moss in a bowl or jar? How do I go about keeping it?

Thank-you

One of our lfs' gives it away, he says it grows too fast on his for him to want to try selling it, although I think that he does expect you to buy something else and not just walk in and ask for j.moss. For much the same reason he sells convict juvies for $0.25 each.

Yes, just in a bowl is fine, you can stick it near a window or put a desk lamp above it with a low-wattage screw-in flourescent bulb. Maybe a drop of plant fertilizer, but java moss really doesn't need it. (On a side note, I one put some in jar and forgot about it, it was in the dark under the stand for a couple weeks and was just fine.) The biggest problem is stagnant water in the bowl or jar, gets scummy on top. Put a stir stick in and stir whenever you pass by.

Sure, I have some in some clear plastic food containers (think Glad or Ziplock) and they do just fine. I love Java moss!

Then why does my java moss always turn brown ?? :(

I have some in a 15 gallon with some ram fry...and most of it just looks brown with a bit of green strands in there. I do add aquarium salt to my water...1/2 teasp per gallon....could that have something to do with it ?

I think we're still trying to figure out why it turns brown, salt *may* have something to do with it, I'm not sure though. Some of mine turned brown as well.
Maybe it wasn't that healthy when we get it.

That's a fair bit of salt to be adding, are you treating for Ich right now? If not, why add salt?

From what ive heard, you have too keep it trimed down so light can get into the bottom of the plant. If it doesnt, it roots from the roots up, and causes the browning you speak of. Try trimming it down a bit, and see what happens.
