My betta has ragged fins

I just came home and i saw my bettas fins, they are all ragged!!!
I've put some aqua plus who is supposed to help protect his fins.
Could you tell me if he's sick or if it's normal.
THANX

Do you have other fish in there that may be nipping on his fins? Are you using any plastic plants? They can sometimes tear their fins on those hard edges while swimming around. How often do you do water changes? What size tank is he in? Is this tank cycled? How long has he been in there?

I'd suggest increasing the water changes, do them daily for awhile or at least evey other day. Be careful starting to medicate too quickly without knowing what the cause is.

How long have you had your betta?
Have you done any water chemistry tests?
Are there any sharp decorations or plastic plants in your aquarium?

I had my betta for 4 weeks. He's in a 2.5 gallon tank. I change water weekly. He's the only fish in the tank. I have 2 plastic plants (i took one out, the one with pointy ends).

Oups!!!
just realised that i've put "bette" instead of "betta"!!! :sad

Ok, he's probably been dealing with some ammonia and nitrites in the water then. Do you have a test kit to test for these? If you don't, it's not necessary to go out and spend the money on the tests if you'll commit to doing daily water changes for the next 2-3 weeks. Changing out 1-1.5 gallons a day should be plenty. That will help the bettas fins heal up and should be enough time for the tank to be completely cycled (that would be 6-7 weeks). Also, if your LFS will test your water free, you can try that too, but don't let them talk you into buying a buncha crap :D

If his fins start to look worse even with the water changes, then try some melafix or something similar (not sure what aqua plus is). After a couple more weeks and once his fins are looking better, you can start cutting back the water changes again.

thanx ArkyLady,
i will go with the water change everyday. Should i put a antistress for my fish, it's also suppose to "adapte" the tap water.
Is this a good plan???? :idea2:

What is the product exactly? I don't trust the adapting the water part. An exact product name will help us know what it is for sure.

All you *have* to put in the water is something to remove the chlorine/chloramine (assuming you have it, most of us do). It's best to use one that removes both so you're covered either way. I prefer Prime, but I suppose any brand should work.

The product i have is AQUA PLUS, tap water conditioner, removes chlorine and chloramine, neutralizes heavy metals, to protect and heal.
Does this help???? :idea2:

Yep, Aqua Plus should do the job just fine. I used to use that myself and never had any problems with it. It's main job is to remove the chlorine and chloramine, so it should be used to treat the new water you add with every water change.

Hope your little guy gets better soon, keep us posted and let us know how it goes :)

thanx a lot ArkyLady. Don't worry i will tell you when my fish is doing better. :bowing:
