Fluval 404 foam baskets

I bought a used fluval 404 on ebay and it came with all the media. I was wondering about the sponge insert tray. It looks like it has four places to put sponges, 2 facing towards the media baskets and two facing away. Am i supposed to have four sponges or just two facing the media baskets?
