I have a 40 gallon breeder tank with tiger barbs, marbled hatchets, and kuhli loaches. I'm getting rid of the tiger barbs and getting angles. Will they be ok w/the kuhli loaches and hatchets? And how many angels can i keep in a 40 gallon breeder?
One last thing, whats a good price for young angels, a little bigger than a quarter i guess.

Angels should be OK with the Loaches and Hatchets.
One pair.
Depends on supply and demand, where your LFS gets their stock etc...
I'd say perhaps four of five dollars apiece for some nice Angels.

OH! HI!, and Welcome to Aquaria Central! :dance

You could keep more, but when mature and especially during breeding they are very territorial towards their own kind. Angels are cichlids, they can be semi-aggressive and also have a penchant for eating smaller members of a community tank, e.g. Neons and such are merely snacks.
Also you must remember how big a adult Angel can get, what with long fins and feelers they need some space just to hover.

if you end up with a male female pair you probably won't be able to keep any other angels in the tank. if, and that is a big IF, you happen to get three females or three males you could keep that group in the tank, but if you get any mix of genders you will have a pair match up that will make living uncomfortable for the other angels in that size a tank.

there is no way to identify the gender of young angels and even adults are almost impossible to tell just by looking at them. so that is why we can only recomend a pair of angels even though the space might biologically support a third angel.

ya that is one way to make sure you get a true pair. angels actually school as youngsters but they will gradually start pushing the others farther and farther away unless they are hooking up.

if you are going for a pair and want to save some of thier offspring you might do well to look for a place to purchase fish that have had efforts made to improve the genetic quality. you may have to order them shipped to you from a breeder but getting good fish to begin with is better for any fish you raise.

I second that. I've seen some horribly malformed angels in lfs. Look for straight, symetrical fins. I've seen whole tanks of angels with none that looked very good. Try to find a locally owned store that specializes in fish. They usually care a little more about the quality of thier livestock. Or you could buy some off of a reputable breeder. Anybody have any suggestions?

ok thanks, and what if there happens to be 2 pairs out of the 4 or 5? Could i keep both pairs in the same tank? And also, when they pair off, do the stay neer the other in the pair?
