Hey guys,

I saw some Java moss for the first time today at my local LFS store, well the LFs guy told me it was java moss anyways. Im not sure if its java moss at all though or wheter the lfs guy new what he was talking about. I got it for 5 bucks for a hand full, so i just bought it. I always thought java moss was more stringy. Anyways, heres a pic, tell me what you think...

By the way, are there different types of java moss?

Edit: It also feels like a sponge when i squeeze it. Maybe that will help, duno....

just by looks I'd wonder about it being java moss too. with medium light java moss can grow like a thick cushion but usually looks more like pillows rather than that odd shaped bunch. in low light it is more stringy and doesnt' branch as much.

Pull it apart. Java moss has branches, with whorls that run up them. If it is Java moss you will see them. Then spread it out. It grows better that way.

Thats actually what i figured. Oh, well i hear these things make excellent nitrate spounges in aquariums, and a great for competing against algae!

Plus, at 5 bucks, thats cheap for these suckers......

I'm fairly certain that what you have a pic of there is what my LFS has labeled as Java moss.

Looks like an older flattened and ripped apart Marino ball. Algae.

Agree with everyone else. That thing has been demolished.
