Yesterday i supposedly bought some java moss, well it wasent java moss at all, but rather Thos marimo balls. I bought algae, YaY!

anyways, i spread it out flat after breaking up the ball and tied it to a rock. What im wondering is, will it grow on the rock and eventually attach it self too it like javamoss does? If so, will it take a very long time, because i here these guys are very slow growers?

Anyone have experience with these things on driftwood or rock?

I've had a marimo ball for almost a year now, and I've since broken it up into 3-4 balls and given some away and have 2 small ones left. I've had zero success getting this stuff to grow on things. As far as I've seen it will not attach itself to anything. I can wedge mine in cracks in driftwood or rocks for months at a time, but it still didn't grow into/onto the rock or driftwood. Even though Java moss grows on the same rocks and driftwood, there's no signs of any sort of attachment. :D Also, watch how much you try to form it, as it is extremely slow growing and can be ripped apart easily. From what I've read they are formed into balls by the small moss threads being blown around in the current. If you look closely you can see how small the individual threads are. With C02 and higher lighting you might get even better results than what I have had.

These mossballs are great. They may be algae, but they look cool as hell and are a great plant because they don't get eaten by anything I've seen(cichlids, tetras, all sorts of catfish, sharks). They also act as filters, so make sure every month or so to take it out during a water change and give it a light squeeze or two to get the crud out. When you break them apart for propagation the inside might have a nice big lump of scum in there.

Is it true that they are also good for sucking excess nutrients out of the water, therefore putting a strangle hold on algae?

Thanks for the info! I suppose il role it back into a ball and lay it somewhere and let it filter away. :D
