View Full Version : Goldfish gulping at top of water
My goldfish keep gulping at the to of the water. She only does this after I feed her, for about 30-45 minutes. My ammonia nitrites and nitrates are all at 0, and ph is 7.4. What could be causing this? She goes to the top and looks like she is trying to drink the water or get more food from the top.

she may be trying to get oxygen, especially because feeding makes them very active and they breath faster. try increasing oxygen (better circulation, surface action)
How do I do this. The reason I refer to the fish as a she is becaue my son named her Dorothy, after Elmo's goldfish!!!

what do you have in the tank (filters, etc.) that makes the surface of the water move? oxygen joins water at the surface and is carried down by surface action and the circulation of the water.

I do have a filter on the tank, not sure the brand, but it is pretty strong, I have a small fake plant in the front of the tank, and the force is strong enough to move it some.

in that case it sounds like oxygen might not be the problem. at this point I'm honestly not sure what it would be unless it is just her natural behavior - I have observed many pond goldfish exhibiting the same behavior, so it may just be something she does naturally.

Sounds quite natural for a goldfish. I've had a few and they all do it from time to time. As long as your water parameters are OK, I wouldn't worry.

I agree that it is not an oxygen deficiency. My goldfish have also done that before. I think it might be them wishing for more food to appear before their mouth! Greedy little goldfish! :D
