What will the numbers for kH and gH tell me?

I know that kH is carbonate hardness and will tell me if it is safe to dose CO2 and it will also tell me the amount of CO2 ppm in my water.

How about gH? I'm not sure what this number will tell me.

The combined amount of calcium and magnesium ions in your water. That is important for breeding certain blackwater fish, and some threshold level is significant for plant growth as well. When a fish is said to be from "soft" water, that is a reference to the GH figure of the fish's native water.
