What's a sucessful way of transfering fish from one tank to another tank without causing any trouble to the fish due to changes in the water, etc.?

you could get one of those handy dandy plastic pocket things that clip onto the edge of the tank (the kind most fish stores use to hold a specimen after they catch it), and gradually acclimate with the new water, or just bag them in some water and acclimate them into the new tank like you just bought them...

but unless your tanks are drastically different, or it's a very fragile specimen, you don't really need much acclimation time when moving from tank to tank.

what size tank are you transfering the fish from and to? if it's not much bigger and your transfering the whole tank then y not place fish into a container with the water put the rest of the tank water into new tank, place fish into new tank now container the water they are used to living in and slowly top it up? thats what i did and i was transfering from a 80g to a 120g tank and i had no probs and fish seemed happy as larry.

We need to know ifboth tanks are cycled and if they have other fish.

You might use a plastic bag or clear plastic container (as mentioned in an above post) with half of the ater from each tank. The float the bag/container like a new fish.

Most fish can be scooped up in a net and released in the new tank. I would be more concerned about discus and similar fish.

I had to transfer my Oscar and Green Terror to a 75gal from a 55gal. The trick was that the 75gal was going into the SAME SPOT that the 55 was already in. Here's what I did:

1) Bought a dark blue rubbermaid(TM) garbage can from Walmart for $8.

2) Pumped as much water as I could from the 55gal into the garbage can by taking the OUTPUT of my cannister filter into the garbage can. I had to be sure to leave enough water in the 55gal for my fish, which were still in there.

3) Net my fish and put them into the garbage can.

4) Drained the rest of the 55gal and moved it out of the way.

5) Put the 75gal in the 55's place, and scooped the rinsed substrate from the 55 into it.

6) Pumped fresh water and the water from the garbage can simultaneously into the 75gal using my python and cannister filter, respectively.

7) Netted my fish from the garbage can and put them into the 75gal.

My fish were back to there old selves within a day. I really think the dark blue garbage can helped to minimize stress, as they couldn't see anything. I also kept the lights off in the new tank for a couple of days (natural light from the room only). Good luck.
