This article covers a lot of things pertinent to the subject, and is one of the better articles out there. Essentially UGF needs something to move water throught the plates. this can be done with an airlift in conventional UGF systems, or you can skip the noisy unreliable air pump, and the bubbly airstones, and the pain in the butt tubing, and put a powerhead on top of the tube to move the water. If you want a reverse flow set-up (I highly reccomend) You have to use a powerhead to accomplish it simply because Airlift only works in one direction. My suggestion would be penguin pwerheads because the system they use is easy effecient and inexpensive. The penguins have sereved me extremely well as far as quality for my dollar goes also.
