I set up a 55 gallon saltwater tank for a guy that I take care of. I work at a home for the handicapped and I only have time on Sundays to do all the water testing. I have 50 lbs. of live rock which have been in there for about 6 weeks and a blue damsel who's been in there for approximately 4 weeks. Now is it possible, being that I'm testing the water weekly, that I missed the ammonia spike? My ammonia is registering almost 0 and the nitrite and nitrate are a just above zero. I'm running a cs90 wet/dry filter and a bak-pak2 protein skimmer.

Yep, especially if the live rock was cured. Cured live rock can essentially prevent an ammonia spike completely--it already has all the bacteria you need, especially with just one small fish in there. I would go slowly on adding fish though, since the size of the bacteria colony is likely small, and additional fish will increase the load. One fish a every other week should give the bacteria ample time to play catch up without causing a large spike.

If the my rock is cured already, (I bought it used from some1 else's tank) Then it can prevent the spike all together?... Is there a way to be sure of this? Or.. how long should i wait... its been 5 days lol i cant wait any longer...

OH also on a side note.. how much Live Sand should i have?... i have 30 lbs. of live sand mixed with 20 lbs of crushed coral. ((((((40 gallon tank))))))

Challenge the tank with ammonia--add enough to test 3ppm, wait 24 hours, and test again. If the ammonia is at 0 in 24 hours, the rock has a substantial bacteria population and will support stocking.
