Hello all once again, just had a couple of questions on Canister Filters.
What are the main Benefits of using one and drawbacks if any?
Should you use an HOB filter with one or does it matter?
At what tank size would you start to use one?
What are some of the ones that you would recommend?

Was thinking of maybe using one in my next tank, wanted to get peoples advise/opinions on them.

thanks...

I have a fulval 304, just ordered a 404 for a new tank without hesitation.

Pros: quiet, inexpensive to clean, do the job REALLY well

cons: expensive, cleaning inside the hoses (after some time out use) is challenging.

Honestly, I think the pros far outweigh the cons here.

Pros. Great Bio filtration, Great Mechanical filtration, and I know I will get flammed for this but they can be cleaned less Frequently. Media, especially Efiermech and Efiersubstrate (sp) lasts longer.

Cons. Expensive at purchase compaird to HOB. If you want activated carbons pads use a cheaper secondary HOB becasue the carbon pads for canisters are very expensive.

Eheim are the best cannister filters.

The pros, are they are great filters, the cons are that they are kinda big and bulky.

I wouldnt recommend any other cannister filter out there other than eheim.

Cons are that too many folks let them go too long between cleanings - and yes, I ahve done so myself.

But they are my primary means of filtration in most of my tanks.

And of course, they are Eheims.
