I'm running a Ehiem 2213 filter in a 20 gal H tank. I'm also running a powerhead to disperse CO2 output from a sintered glass diffusor. Between the filter and the powerhead, there is more current than I'd like.

Question: Can I restrict the output from the filter a little (using a ball valve) without damaging the filter?

if you restrict the out flow ... it will cause the moter to over heat..IMO

You can reduce the output on Eheims without problems. Not the intake, but the output side is okay.

Have you tried turning the spraybar so that its holes are aimed at the wall on which the return is mounted? Toward the glass and aimed down abit work pretty well for me. It keeps flow normal but reduces current a lot.

Another option is drilling more holes in the spraybar, or drilling the existing holes a size larger. This also maintains normal flow but reduces current.

One of the big advantages of spraybars is the control they offer on direction and force of current.

I believe many canisters have an adjustible flow option now and therefore should not over heat the motor. I use a Rena XP2 that will be going on a 75g, on my 30g and have to turn the flow down all the way. It doesn't sound any different then when it is on full.
