I inherited a 29 Gallon aquarium awhile back. I have a California Kingsnake in it now, but I'm building the snake a bigger vivarium. I wanted to use the aquarium for some tropical fish now. The problem is there has always been a white discoloration all around the top half of the aquarium. I'm not too sure what it is....I think it maybe calcium. I tried to clean it with vinegar(not sure if this would have worked on it or not) but it didn't work. When the white part gets wet it looks like it's gone but, when it dries it comes back in the same place. Any ideas what this could be and how I can safely get rid of it?
-Thanks,
Mike

try a razer blade, and maybe some tank cleaner from the LFS thay recomend. I use to have a vivarium also BTW there a blast!

I found that "clr" seems to work but when it dries, the white film is still there. Not as bad but still there.I finally gave up and filled the tank. As you said, when wet , you can't see it .So I say "screw it" , fill her up.

Thanks guys...I think I'll try the lime off...I'll let ya know if it works

ok so I drove around to all the lfs in the area and no one seemed to carry lime off. The owner of the one lfs said that lime off doesn't work. He also said that after the glass has been like that for awhile it is pretty much etched in. has anyone had success with lime off, or have any other suggestions?

Same problem

I got a tank from a friend and it has the same problem. He tried to clean it off and tried clr before I got it. I tried vingar and a razor and it does not help. I tried the lime remover and no help there. Any other sugestions?
Also My friend did use clr what effect will it have. Can I make the tank fish safe?
Thanks, Trotzkie

How did you use the vinegar?
Vinegar is a weak acid, so it takes some time to work. Try laying the tank on its side, putting paper towels over the area with the film, dribble on vinegar till it's wet, then let it set for a few hours, or even overnight. Then, just wipe the area down with the wet towels, rinse with water, & wipe dry.
I do this with everything from glass to ceramics to plastics to my faucet aerators-works wonders! and it doesn't leave residue that will harm your tank.
HTH! :dance2:

A note obout lime off, lime away, it soes not work been there tried that, soemone is frequently suggesting oxiclean for this. Its worth a try
