alrighty, my question is:
i dont buy live plants, unless for my painted turtle to eat, but my wife asked me to get some because she had two female swords about to give birth in a 5g and wanted to make sure the fry had some cover. so i picked up some plants yesterday (good thing, the swords both let loose lastnight, and we have about 60 fry now), and today, there is little snails and freshwater shrimp all over the tank, heh heh. kinda cool, i hope the snails grow big, and shrimp dont bother me at all, but my question is, would i always get these kinds of things when buying live plants?

also wanted to say, besides my wifes several dozen new friends, my shipment from **************** came in today and i now have 2 beautiful african butterfly and 2 spiffy new hillstream loaches in my 130.:)

i did what research i could on the hillstream loach before ordering, but wasnt really able to find alot on them. has anyone ever kept them before? any tips/advice?

I am not 100% but the loach might eat the snails. My clown loach cleaned mine up, and I was trying to get a little colony going.

The snails came from the plants. Probably the shrimp too , since you didnt add anything else...unless your fish created shrimp babies, which would be a first.

Your snails probably will not grow big...I can't remember their name...ramshorn or something, I'll look it up. they are small, and can overtake your tank if you're not careful.

Snails happen quite often. I have never gotten shrimp but I would welcome them. A lot depends on where you shop.

The hillstream loach will not eat the snails. He is an algea eater only. He is also known as a Chinese Butterfly Pleco. Their habitat is in rivers, they enjoy a current and they prefer a cooler a water tempature. Here is a link so you can find out more about them. They're great fish.

i was pretty sure the loach wouldnt eat the snails, i know clown loaches, and most other botias will, but that wasnt a concern. the snails are in a 5g and the loaches are all in a 130g.

they arent ramshorn snails, i have a ramshorn snail in my 130. and yes, i know they came from the plants.

thanks kabong for the link, i shall read up :)
