I was wondering if any piranha owners out there knew of any good live foods for my fish, I use rosy reds, and some times feeder guppies, but I was looking for something a little bigger. Also my tank stinks, Is it possible for a kind of food to make the tank smell, or is there someting I need to do. Thanks

LOL my RBP tank stinks too. Just to be safe, I tested my levels and nothing was high or irregular so I did a 50% water change and it weakened the stank a little but nothing to be too nervous about...I would test just to be sure that your ammonia\nitrates\nitrites levels are not high. As for live food, I have fed them rosy's, feeder goldfish, Big Big Big Goldfish (8-10 inches), an 8 inch Pleco (not on purpose, I was testing them... to see if they were compatible), fathead minnows (they love them, local bait shop has them). For dead meat, I have given them Frozen Beef Heart, Frozen Brine Shrimp and misc. frozen shrimp\beef\crab\steak.... All dead meat must not be cooked in anyway.. and I extensively removed the fat from all the "Human Meat" I have given them..Steak is not good because of its fat content, but I did it once and the loved it.....

*edit* ooohhh and when I catch a store with feeder guppies, which is hardly never, I always pick some up...

Do you do regular water changes and gravel vacs? If you have rotting fish left over from dinner in the tank, that could cause a smell !!!

While I do not know this to be true for RSP, I highly doubt that is what it is...Piranhas don't leave food to rot....Mine always eat everything until they can explode and they kill anything that irritates them while they are full. Then when they are ready to eat again (like 2-4 hrs after being stuffed), they go and eat leftovers.

Just an idea, my brother had some many years ago, and they weren't very vicious and I would see the occasional piece of leftover fish floating around (ewww!!!) and his tank always seemed to have a funny smell to it!!

I just checked up and realized I might have sounded rude. Sorry if that was the case cuz I certainly wasn't trying to be.....It's weird b\c at first they used to eat all fish except heads, and the heads were like a dessert or something for later LOL...

No harm done!! I didn't think you were rude, but I noticed the person who posted the question doesn't have many posts, which could mean nothing, and hes an expert, but I thought I would just throw out an idea! I've learned so much on here, I've began to feel obligated to make suggestions, if I know anything !!

LOL I can relate! Everytime I see a Piranha post I act like a 4 yr old...."Move, Get outta my way!!! I was here first!!!" Piranhas are the only fish I know a lot about.
