Hello,
Just a very confusing question. I have a male guppy that is 4-5 months old and he is bound and determined to mate with my two nubian swordtails. Now I know that they can't produce anything, and they run away from him to the point of exhaustion. Anyone have any thoughts, other then therapy for my little guy? Oh oh yeah, got one more question, I'm fairly sure they can, but can swords and platies produce offspring?? Just wondering, any help appreciated, thanks in advance

Sometimes male fish are not particulairly concerned if the female tankmates are the same species. I have a dalmation molly who thinks our balloon ram is his girlfriend. Although I'm pretty sure that the ram is male as well, and a egg layer to boot. And our platy is constently trying to get it on with a sailfin molly. :p The swordtail and assorted platy are of the same genus just different species of the fish. It is possible for them to breed and you may get a hybrid fish from them. If the females are uninterested though they just may not allow conception to happen.

Ayep, swords and platies can reproduce. As for what to do about the guppy, are you opposed to having a couple of girlfriends of his specie around?

I have a platy male and his son from a former spawn, and he thinks dad is hot.... I pity poor daddy, lucky he has lots of hiding spots.
I also have a swordtail female, maybe she is too young at this point for this dumb platy to notice her.

its not ironic, just coincidental and shows a lack of looking around for answers before asking them :D

This pretty common for livebearers to try and mate with others. I have seen this multple times and actually yes, Live bearers can cross. It has been done with Platies and Swords, and actually it works with Endlers and Guppies. They all come from the same family so its pretty natural.

Do livebearer males often pester each other when there are no females around? I've been thinking about getting 3 or 4 male platys-no females. (I don't want fry!)

It all depends on the character of the fish. Some males can stand other males, while some "fuss", and some fight to the death like bettas. IME male platies get along better than male swords.
