At present I have a couple of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi living in my 66 gal South american biotop aquarium (plus 28 cardinal tetra, 7 corydoras trilineatus and one panaque maccus).

I have been thinking about getting a little Apistogramma agassizii familj (1 male + 3 females). But the other day this person who seems to know quite a few things about ram cichlids advised med not to have both species in the same tank. She said I should get one more couple of rams instead. While other people have said it would be better to have both species instead of 2 ram couples.

So now I'm confused  and I'd like to hear your oppinions on this.

In my limited experience Apistos do not get along well with other cichlids. My cacatuiodes would constantly target the rams in my 29g over several non-cichlid species. You have a bigger tank so you might be able to get away with it. I found that putting a mound of gravel in one corner with mulitple shale caves built into it made that corner "home base" for my apistos. I constructed a "line of sight" screen out of bogwood and plants at about midtank. This gave the other inhabitants a place to escape harrasment.

If you try it I would suggest having a Q tank to remove the rams to if problems arise (they will certainly be the lossers in whatever battle insues)

Thank you so much for your answer! They do need their territories. The questions is then, is my tank large enough?
