I live in Central CA and the water is extremely hard... what is the easiest way to correct this problem... I have tried pH down products, water softener pillows, even adding acid but the buffering capacity is so great it jumps right back up over night... the only thing I have seen work is a tank full of gold fish! I am thinking reverse osmosis (but what kind of unit) or purchasing bottled water and starting over... please help... thanks

Reverse osmosis would work. You'd like want to experiment and find a mix of RO and tap that gives you a moderate hardness with stable pH, but very workable. The additives and such really don't work for lowering hardness. Of course, there are many fish that like hard water, like African cichlids, so that might be an option as well. What are your values, and what are you wanting to keep? Honestly, with the exception of some wild-caught soft water species, most fish can be acclimated to a variety of waters successfully.
