Would it be possible to keep a Ram (bolivian or blue?) in a 10 gallon?

I also have 3 corydoras. If the only fish I add is a ram, is it possible to keep one in a 10 gallon? I hear that blue rams are difficult to keep, so I might get a bolivian. Is this a good idea?

Oh, and would a ram mess with plants? My aquarium is rather densely planted so I hope the ram will be compatible with my plants if I decide to get one...

I saw the rams at the LFS, and most of them had ich. There is only one bolivian ram that doesn't have ich yet, but when I buy it later (IF I do), it might contract ich. :(

I think one blue ram should be ok in a 10 gallon...but I don't think they get along very well with corys....the corys use the same space in the aquarium as the rams and they generally consider them a pest..lol..

I only have blue rams..and I haven't found them to be all that difficult to keep. The only difficulty I can see with them is that they stress out ALOT at the move from the LFS to your home. You have to be very careful when acclimating them to thier new home....going very slowly. Once mine acclimated they've been fine....even spawned a few times.

Rams use the bottom of the aquarium? I heard blue rams need really clean water conditions so I thought they are hard to keep. But I change water 40 percent once a week so I think that might be sufficient. btw, do they do well in planted aquariums?

Yes, Rams are good for planted aquariums. I have a pair of blue rams that I got a week ago. Take your time in acclimating them. Check your pH levels and make sure that it is at least neutral or lower. I scooped out a cup of water from the bag and replaced it with a cup of tank water.... did that every 10-15 minutes or so. Mine adapted really well, ate the first night, spawned two days later... of course, they ate their eggs, so now they are back to being normal and not in a breeding frenzy. I was also surprised to note that they will take most any food I give them... even the floating flakes at the top of the tank that I put out for the tetras.

I don't think the PH is as important as some say. The PH in my tank runs around 8.0. My rams do just fine, they have spawned twice so far since I've gotten them....the second batch is about 6 weeks old now and also doing perfectly well in my higher PH water.

I agree that the Rams will most likley have issues with the cories in that small of a space. Every time a cory got near my Rams in my 55 gallon they would have none of it. I would stay away from that combo.

I think in a planted 10 gallon you would be best off adding a betta or gourami instead. They are active, colourful and do well in that sort of setup with cories.

Also if all the ram's but 1 have ich then that one has ich as well, it just isn't showing it yet. So you will need to q-tank him and medicate for 2-3 weeks before adding it to the 10 gallon tank. All new fish should go through a q-tank, but definatley those rams you speak of.

I would think a ram with Ich at the pet store is a no go. They are well known for being hard to acclimate and wanting decent water. You'd be doubly stressing such an animal by taking it home, then using a treatment for the Ich. Those are the kinds of odds I'd avoid unless the LFS said I could get a full refund in 30 days, or were willing to treat the Ich completely themselves.
