my fish tank just finished cycling yesterday and i was going to get a pair of blue rams today. i have heard many different things about them. can anyone tell me the true difficulty of aclimating/keeping this fish? also what would be the best way to acclimte it to my tank?
I would definately use the 5 gallon as a q-tank if I were you. Add some filter media from the 20 gallon to avoid a cycle and add some hiding spots to make the new rams comfy.
Most people liek the slow drip method for fish that are considered weaker and easily stressed from moves. I dump all the bag water and fish into a small container. Then I slowly start to add some clean water from the setup tank. Every 10 minutes I will scoop out some fish store water (1/2 to 1 cup) and add the same amount of clean water back in. I do this for 2 hours and then net the fish and place into their new home or temp home in the case of a q-tank. Observe them for at least 1 week, 2 is better and then add to their new 20 gallon home.

I bought two blue rams 2 months ago. I floated the bag in my aquarium for 20 minutes. Added some tank water and waited 20 more minutes. Netted them and put them in the tank. My ph is around 7.7. I change 5 or 10 gallons of my 29 gallon tank every two to three weeks. My rams are doing great. I like you have read about how delicate they are and how they have to be in 6.6 ph water, but mine seem pretty darn hardy. They are also a pair of eating machines. share their tank with 2 neons, 5 harlequins, 2 ottos, 1 guppy, 4 albino cories and 4 ghost shrimp.

I use to breed rams when I was a kid. They are sensitive to drastic water chemical change so I always drip acclimate. They do like very warm and acidic water (about 80+ degress and PH of below 7.0).
I still love them, I have 6 in my 100gal now. :)
