I got a nice deal on a 55g corner aquarium locally and will be starting the fishless cycle process Monday, but wanted to go ahead and start getting some stocking ideas in mind now.

Tank Specs
Filters: Rena XP2 and AC200
Substrate: Sand
Lighting: Very low
Heating: 2 Jager 150w
Décor: Extra Large piece driftwood, 2 - 4” clay pots, and (potentially) slow growing, low light background plants.
Dimensions: Basically a square with a 5 gallon triangle cut out of one corner of the glass. H24”, W22”, L22”.

I’m really lost as to what to put in this right now and would appreciate any opinions. I’ve already got a couple standard community freshwater tanks and would probably like to try something a little different with this one.

My thoughts were either Angelfish tank or maybe a few Malawian (or any colorful cichlids that would work) Cichlids, but I don’t really know if it is big enough for either. My other thought was maybe just one or two moderately large fish as everything I’ve ever owned is quite small.

Any recommendations are welcome for a good stocking solution to this tank. I’ve never dealt with a tank this large or with these kind of dimensions before.

Thanks to my new 9-5, I am an offical night-watcher now....I have recently taken a shine to Tiger Barbs, a school of them would be nice..

3-4 angels would probably do ok. Right now I have 3 in a standard 55g (48x13x20) and they are doing fine. You tank is a littel taller than mine so I would think that would be even better for angels.

One of the nicest things is a few large fish complimented by a school of smaller so a few Angels would look nice with a school of cardinal tetra's ( neon's may get eaten ) for some flash !! also if you have the cash improve your lighting get some plants ( jave fern & Jave moss are great ) and for a clean up crew...3-5 oto cats and 1 bristlenose pleco would be great and you would have a super tank !!

Thanks for the feedback so far, I appreciate it.

I'm sold on the Angelfish. Thanks for the feedback on what to put with them as well.

Any other recommendations for good Angelfish tank mates?

Angelfish? Nooooo!!! I was too late!!! Darn you recurring burrito incident!!! *ahem*

Anyways, if you're still open to cichlids. I would suggest making a Lake Tanganyika themed tank. With like 4 syndontis multipunctatus, 1 Tanganyikan spiny eel, some Tanganyikan Cichlids like neolamprologus leleupi, neolamprologus brichardi, or some julidochromis regani.

Gah! I just twitch thinking about it!
