Im starting my first tank since I was a kid and theres a lot of new products out now and I want to start out on the right foot. I will be starting the cycling process in the next few days. I am going to try and find some BIO-Spira to help it along. But my question is what kind of filter media should I use during the cycling process and onces that done, should I change media? The tank will be a planted community tank. Using a Cascade 1000 canister filter in a 75 gallon tank. The substrate is all Eco-complete with a Substrate heater.

Can you switch to a FilStar or Eheim caniser? Cascade isent really the best one that there is.

I would use a few sponges, filter floss, and maybe some cermaic rings. Im my FilStar I have 2 layers of sponges, 3 sheets of filter floss, and then a small bit of cermaic rings. I use old tank water to wash out the cermaic rings about every 6 months. The sponges and floss get cleaned every month. And I normaly dont replace anything unless it is falling apart.

What does that have to to with anything???

It's the filter the guy has and is using. What does it matter if it is #1, #2 or #10000 on the filter scale?

As for the question. Pretty much all of the substrates are interchangable. I like the eheim. Some like the fluval some the Rena.

In my eheims I use one level of rings (Ehfimech), two levels of substrate (Ehfisubstat) with a bit of filter floss on top that gets thrown out every time I clean the filters.

You can even go with bioballs in the filter if you wish. I have a friend who uses plastic army men in some filters and lego in others.
