What kind of filter media to use?

Im starting my first tank since I was a kid and theres a lot of new products out now and I want to start out on the right foot. I will be starting the cycling process in the next few days. I am going to try and find some BIO-Spira to help it along. But my question is what kind of filter media should I use during the cycling process and onces that done, should I change media? The tank will be a planted community tank. Using a Cascade 1000 canister filter in a 75 gallon tank. The substrate is all Eco-complete with a Substrate heater.

Yeah I know it was a double post but I didnt realized that this was the area it was supose to be in. But thank you for your info. Its givin me a lot to go with. I havent been able to find alot of info on the subject.
