Hi,
I recently got an ich outbreak in my main tank which I am treating with raised temp. and 1-2 tsp. salt per gallon. Anyways, this is a new tank and I need to ad more fish to it sooner or later and the only place around here to get fish is from Petmart or Petco which is why my tank has ick now. So, I want to set up a 10 gallon tank to use as a quarantine tank. I have read the links about the quarantine tanks but I still have a few questions. They say that you do not have to have it up and running all the time and you can just use filter material from your established tanks.
First question... if I put some filer material in one of my tanks, how long will it take to build up enough bacteria before I can use it?
Also, I have a Bio-wheel in my tanks. Could I go ahead and take the filter material out to use in the q-tank and put a new one in without having to go through a mini cycle again since I have the bio-wheel on there?
My thinking is that new fish should be in quarantine for 30 days, so I could get a couple new fish now and by the time they are ready move into the main tank, it will be rid of the ick that is in it.
You all have been a big help so far and I want to thank you in advance for your help again.
