okay, so in my small 10 gallon that I set up for quarentine, I filled it about 3 quarters full with water from my tank that has been set up for over a year with no problems, (then topped it up with new water) and 3 plants from the established tank. I did an ammonia test that read 0, but regardless, one of my fish in quarentine still died. So i went out and got a new test kit, and sure enough, the ammonia tested at about 0.35. I did a 50% water change and that lowered it, but what else should i do?

Is this the fish you were enquiring about in your other thread? It sounds to me like your quarantine tank is still cycling. Adding water from your established tank won't provide the necessary bacteria. Perhaps you should add some media from the filter on your cycled tank to speed up the process.

yes it is the tank from the other thread. I added some media yesterday. things are starting to even out, but i will still keep up on the water changes. I knew that the water from the other tank was not going to help much, but I really thought the plants that were in there would. Now I feel really bad for putting my fish through that :sad

Is it worth the risk to put your fish through an uncycled quarantine rather than just adding them to the established tank? Do you suspect that there is another health issue affecting them besides exposure to ammonia + nitrites?

well, i was thinking about doing that, but these fish also seemed to have what looked like a little few spots of ich. I guess i could take them back to the store, but i decided to be stubbron and try to treat them.

There is an article in the Articles forum regarding Quarantine tanks and how to keep them cycled. It's a long read, but it explains a lot of things and if something doesn't make sense, ask me to clarify in this thread and I'll do my best. great article! I will never do wrong again (I hope). Now lets just hope poor mr. bojangles lives thru it.

Harlock's article is excellent. Is this fish new? I wonder if it is worth it to put him through the stress of a fishy cycle on top of trying to treat for suspected ich? Can it be returned to your LFS until you have the Q-tank fully prepared?
