Can I just stick an air tubing into a sponge to make a filter?

Also, use google. just type in DIY Sponge filter and hit search. You'll get lots of results to compare and contrast to find something you can use.

If you just have an air pump and you want to make a filter you need at least an air stone. Something to break up the bubbles. You want a sponge that will allow air movement, not a sponge that resists air movement. You can freeze it and drill the holes for the tubes and the air stone.

This is not much of a filter but if will work on small tanks. You do still need to make sure the tank is cycled. The sponge can do this but it has to be large enough.

The air pump just causes the flow of water to rise through the sponge. The sponge becomes all at once the mechanical and biological filter.

It can be done. When you do water changes wash the sponge in tank water.
