Hi Plant Guru's

First tnank complete newbie. Changed form fake to real plants about 4 weeks after starting up. PLease see my signature for full list of plants.
On my Laeliopsus I have black hairs  growing off of it. I don't have these hairs growing anywhere else and my shrimp keep most of the decor relatively alga free
Questions - is the hair an algae?
anything that likes eating this black hair stuff?
Should I remove the plant and all runners it's put out - not desireable as i love it!
Ammonia - 0
Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - less than 5 (as accurate as test goes)
2 x Hagen fermentation CO2.
other info: I recently reduced surface disruption form the filter to lower PH and increase ammount of CO2 in the water. I htink this is cause but my plants and angels are loving the water conditions.

Any help would be greatly apreciated. Please check sig for my fish list. I will be moving all but the danios into a 100g at the end of the month (new Juwel vision 450 bowfront).
Thanks in advance
Chaz

Are the hairs in individual strands or clumps?

Very little will eat this, it's usually a sign that CO2 is low.

From your listing, you should have more NO3 (aim for 10ppm). What are your PO4 levels if you've got a test kit? PO4 should be present at about 1ppm.

You will, ultimately need to do something to remove the algae, a dip in a solution of 25:1 water:bleach for about 2-3 minutes will do the trick, but save that for after all your params are balanced that way you can be sure it's gone for good.

hi happychem
as usual thanks for speedy response.

hairs are individual and look like v small arm hairs! they only affect one plant - do you mean dip the plant in 25:1 water:bleach?

PO4 - have test kit (Hagen master) so will check tonight and feedback

I think I'm going to upgrade to a presurised system as I have altered output of CO2 twice now (think it was you who told me how actually!) and it's making no more difference than when first running. I will have another play with diffuser tonight to see if there are any blockages etc restricting flow of CO2.

to be fair my LFS said it was quite a demanding plant and would be a stretch in my set up (enhanced std lighting with reflectors but that's it) but it was doing quite well.

Thanks for advice. I have a free sample (with CO2 system) of iron based supliment (brown liquid) again from Hagen. Would that help?

thanks
Chaz
