I don't use it because my water is pretty hard. i think that will be the only time not to use BS.

I'd add a bit of baking soda to the DIY mix. I think the little fellers use it to build their shells.
I'd add a bit to the tank if the KH falls below 3 (more likely I'd add some crushed coral).

I believe 1tsp. will raise the kH 4 degrees in 13 gallons of water so just use a little algebra and you should be good to go.maverick2402 said:
Isn't a kH of 8 safe enough to add CO2? I don't think you have need of putting baking soda into your aquarium, but half a teaspoon of it in your 2 litre bottle of CO2 won't hurt.
BTW, how would I use Baking soda to raise my aquarium water kH? Do I just add directly into the aquarium, or do I first dissolve in a cup, then add the dissolved baking soda directly into my aquarium? Or some other way? Is arm and hammer baking soda safe to use?
