Hi All,

I was thinking about creating my own culture of live Brine Shrimp using one of the commercially available hatchers with an air pump etc.

Please could someone let me know if I would be waisting my time as the primary targets for the live food are my Angels and I would want them to eat it aswell as my Danios (think Danios eat anything!)

They (Angels) love frozen blood worm and they eat it out of my hand.

My angels are all juveniles with the biggest being no more than 3" fin to fin and 3" from tip of tail to mouth

They are moving "house" at the end of the month to a 100g if anyone is concerened about my stocking limits.

Any advice would be apreciated

Your angels will more than likely love the brine shrimp as well. Mine do, but I read somewhere on this forum that brine shrimp isn't all that nutritional as they consist mostly of water, so to feed them as a treat every now and then. I'm sure the live brine shrimp will have a little more nutrition to them verses the frozen ones though.
My fish don't complain...they get 1 cube brine shrimp and 2 cubes bloodworms daily and then I rotate with other food such as flakes, pellets, wafers, veggies etc. Everyone is thriving and my angels have bred numerous times already.

I've tried to raise up brine shrimp to a larger size, and found it extremely difficult, messy, and generally more trouble than it's worth (for the nutrition they provide). You might be able to buy live adult bs at a lfs. I was able to keep them alive for a week with aeration, water changes, and some commercial bs food.

Baby brine shrimp are another matter. Easy to hatch, and nutritious. I start a batch, use them for about a day and a half (after that their nutritional value decreases rapidly) and then start a new batch.

With that said, here is a well written article on raising adult bs.

Guys thanks for your advice
mooman - at's a good article!!!

I fround a brand new unused hatchery set including eggs (apparently benn irradicted of disease), salt mix and everything but the air pump on Ebay for £10. Even if I only get a few batches of baby's out of that gotta be worth it!
