My tank is currently fishless as I'm letting it run its parasite cycle before introducing new fish. My question is, in the meantime, do I need to feed my crabs/snails? If so, what do I feed them? I noticed the past few days my crabs have become much more aggressive, and even attacked and killed several snails. I'm now starting to think they simply are hungry, but I'm not sure. BTW, I have plenty of live rock in the aquarium, and my conditions are great overall. Lastly, is there anything else I should do to keep the bacteria levels up in my tank? I've heard that fishless tanks often lose bacteria since they don't have amonia to feed on. Thanks.

I feed my hermit crabs on cockle (1 or 2 a week) - they are thriving and race to the cockle every tmie I drop one in, the rest of my tank seems fine. I also have quite a few snails and they tend to leave them alone.

Yes, the inverts need to be fed. You can either put in a bit of fish food, or for snails and hermits, algae wafers are a good option.

No, there isn't anything you can do to maintain the bacteria levels that won't endanger the inverts--you will have to start slowly and monitor for ammonia when you start re-stocking.

with that in mind, I assume you'd recommend starting with 1-2 small fish (I have a 55 gal set up), then gradually adding from there? As of now, I plan on starting with a clown fish and bicolor angelfish.

Yep, that should be fine. I'd go with the least aggressive fish first--could be either one, depending on what kind of clown.

corrie, why do you say that about the bicolor? Is there a reason why I shouldn't put him in at first?

Because the bicolor will set up its territory in the take and wont let any other new fish near it however if hes introduced after the other fish can get settled he will be less aggresive.
