It's not necessary to use a power filter if you use live rock? Just power heads? How much rock would be needed? Man there is so much to learn and alot different than FW. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go along here. Just hope you dont mind answering them.

I have a 25g minireef with three small water pumps and 40-50 pounds of live rock, a maroon clown,a yellow damsel and a watchman goby. I also have many hermit crabs, snails, a star fish and a lot of corals. There is no filter and I do a small (<20%) water change every few weeks and some basic supplementation. The tank has been running for over 3 years and is probably one of my clearest tanks and the corals are growing and thriving. I found it hard to believe that I didn't need a filter when I first set the tank up, too, but my experience has been great and the reef tank is my pride and joy of all my tanks!

I have 2 120 gallon tanks running with about 150 pounds of rock and 3-4 inches of sand each. Powerheads, and the return from the sump for current. No mechanical filtration, no power filters at all. The FO is a bit rougher to maintain this way because the trigger prevents the use of invertebrates for clean up, but the nitrogen levels are all 0 in both. Water change every other week, clean the glass once a week. Corals are spreading in both setups, inverts and fish are all healthy and fat.
