I have my 50 gal tank working on cycling, and has had plants for a little over a week. I need to decide who to populate it, and am leaning toward gouramis...pearl ones if I can find them. I would like to stock the tank with fish that come from the same area of the world, who might possibley shared the same type of space in the wild. My reference guide is the Baensch aquarium atlas & I've been looking and have thought of kuhli loaches..I have snails already.
Has anyone here ever done this and what other fish might you put int eh tank.
Can you put a male betta in with gouramis?

I have sand and fluorite subtrate with driftwood and live plants. My ph runs high..7.5 ish, and hardness is high, and a 50 gal tank.

yeah, u can put male betta with gouramis no probs. already u have a planted tank, just provide some hiding places using rocks. tht will help the betta hide when it is newly introduced and also he can mark his territory, as i have known them to be quite territorial but tolerant of other fishes. and u can also start with blue gouramis as they r more common and hardy than pearls, and u will have some experience with gouramis too. watever u do, try to put pearls in a larger number instead of just a pair or two. blue, honey and pearl gouramis will certainly b a nice combination of gouramis. Also u can go for some black moontail mollies, spotted mollies and platies like the yellow ones those r very attractive.

if u r planning to put kuhli loach make sure u have some hiding places, though most the time u wont find them in ur tank as they will be burried in the gravel.

good luck with your new tank.

contrary to lucky_ducky's post, i have read numerous times about gouramis in a tank with male betas, all of which ended up saying either its iffy, or dont at all since its too much of a risk.

do not put a male batta in with gouramis!!!! bad idea, they will fight constantly.

nix the gourami and betta combo, I had a betta in with my pearl no problems, but unpredictable at most being from the same family. The pearl are both beautiful and gentle. You can set up a 5g for a betta later :) Here comes mts (multiple tank syndrome) .

I say one male pearl and 3 female in your 55g with a couple of siamese flying fox (sae) And a schooling fish like rasbora in a large group 8 or 10, and 4 ottocinclus (for algae) and khuli's 3 to 4 can work (all fish from s.e. asia except for the ottos)

Swimfins, you must be psychic!! I really like harlequin rasboras and was thinking of them also. I had heard of not mixing the labrynith fishes, but wondered if people around here had heard that or not. Actually I have a 10 gal to set up, plant and put a betta in, but one thing at a time! And I have a place picked out for a 20 long...just have to get one :p DH doesn't know that yet.
And I'd like a 100 or bigger for clown loaches. I think they are so cool!
