Hi,
I am changing my 50g. community tank into a Malawi cichlid tank. I know that I want:
Cynotilapia Afras
Labidochromis Caeruleus
Pseudotropheus Saulosi.
It said max. of 12 in a 55 gallon, so what would you think I could have in my 50g? My 50 is the same size as my 55, but a few inches shorter.

And if I get these as babies, how do I make sure I only get one male of each? how does that work when you get babies?

Is there any bottom dwellers I could have or do I need them?

One more question, my husband really likes those upside down catfishes. Could they go in this tank or would it be best not to?
Thank you for your help

For most species, when they are juvies, it is very difficult to tell, if not immposible to tell, if they are a male or female. In the case of the Labidochromis caeruleus, it is immposible to tell even when they are mature just by looking at them. You have to vent(place them in your hand and look at the underbelly) them to know for sure.

I would say you'd be good with 12 fish.

Get 4 or 5 of each and then take out the extra males as the fish mature and you can sex them.

Synodonits are good catfish for africans, but i would go with petricola or multipuncatus, since these are from lake Tang they are african catfish and are accustomed to the high pH.

You may have a problem with the yellow lab males and saulosi females, and the afra and saulosi males because they look kind of similar. You might be ok though, some people have problems and some dont.
