I was doing a water change tonite (actually I am in the midst of a water change). I THOUGHT I had seen an itsy bitsy swimming thing in the water that I sucked up in the siphon, so I thought I'd check my water before I dumped it down the sink. Low and behold, I shined a flashlite in the water and there's little tiny specks swimming in the water! I'm almost positive they are baby fish, they look like tiny minnows. And I mean TINY. Anyway, if they are baby fish, I'd like to keep them instead of dumping them down the sink. What do I do? They are sitting in a bucket of dirty water right now. I will run to Wal-Mart to see if I can find something to keep them in in the aquarium, but for now I don't have anything. What should I do? I can't go to Wal-Mart til my boyfriend gets home in 2 hours... Thanks in advance.

Erin

PS: If they are baby fish, they are most likely zebra danios. I have gouramis (all female), neons, cories, ottos, and danios.

Your best bet aside from setting up a "grow-out" tank would be to get yourself a "breeder net" that you can put into your existing tank. You're also going to need something to feed them...which you may or may not be able to get at walmart. I don't know if zebra danio fry would be able to eat crushed flake food or not...maybe some else will have better suggestions.

For now, assuming you can get them into the tank in the next couple of hours, I'd put them in some clean TANK water in a bowl and float it in the tank to keep it from getting too cold.

If you put the little swimmers in a new tank, generally they will not survive. I have done this before with Kribs, once the pack dispursed the moms and dads ate them. I would do the breeding net thing, I have never used them but it is better than putting them in a totally difference environment.

Good Luck

I got to Wal-Mart and found a net breeder, so they are in that now. I think there's about 20 of them that I could find. Sadly I had to dump a few down the drain because I couldn't catch them with my mini-siphon :) I do believe there's still some in the aquarium too, so I guess we'll see what happens. Thanks for the advice.

when my zebra danios were the only fish in my tank, i was finding fry with every water change. i tried a breeding net, but they were so small, the other danios would eat them right through the net. good luck to you. i hope yours make it.

Back in the day we used to feed fry infusoria. I think nowadays they have fry food that comes in a tube. Check your LFS and ask for fry food.

Or, you can make your own infusoria...

Take some aquarium water. Put it in a clear glass jar and add several crushed flakes of food. Put in direct sunlight. In a couple of days, you'll notice the water is cloudy. That is infusoria. Take a dropper and add a half teaspoon several times a day into the breeder net. Or, if you read Wetman's site, he'll tell you you can add a lettuce leaf or banana peel to the water. I tried that once, but the banana peel got all slimy, so I stick with the fish flakes.
