If its dark and yucky green and very old algae, its probably fowl and unpalatable. Otto's prefer soft green fresh algae and brown algae. They won't eat anything that's been around awhile. Your better to scrape that off by yourself. As well, little otto's can only pack away so much algae. It may be just more than they can handle. So, again you'll have to help by scraping yourself.

I just put three otocinclus in a ten gallon tank that has Diatoms gone wild yesterday. It is unbelievable how much of this stuff they eat. I keep expecting them to explode. I have read that green spot algae gets to hard for them to rasp. But they do seem to eat the new stuff.
