Few tips on hermit crabs Dont buy them for your display tank they tend to pick your live rock clean and attack other life in the tank if your thinking about having hermit crabs put them in your sump only they will keep it clean for you or dont buy them at all ...
One good thing about hermit crabs if you end up with a alge build up on your sand in a large tank they can remove it with in a few hours ..
if you have had something not do well or caused other problems post it hear

Digging fish should be approached with caution. I ended up removing a really nice engineer goby (also called a convist blenny) simply because it dug too much, clouding the tank when I swapped substrates. I'd planned for the digging in terms of securing rock to avoid a collapse, but the digging kept a fine haze of particles in the water no matter what--no good.

Depends on the hermits, and the density. I've never seen a scarlet eat anything moving in 4 years. My rocks are covered with sponges, fanworms, tunicates and corals, despite the constant presence of hermits.
Mostly I just don't like sweeping generalizations. Saying "all hermits are bad" is akin to "all bristleworms are beneficial scavengers."

Hermits are not known for killing much on live rock however they will fight if not enough shells are provided for them. They eat the algae off the live rock.
It really does depend on the hermits and density like dave said. Red reefs and leftys are good critters I'd try to keep populations at like 1 per 3 gals with a bunch of extra shells so they don't kill your snails. I do however have some serious doubts about the blue legs they can be such monsters! If you are going to stock them I'd go like one per 5 gals with pleanty of extra shells. FWIW I think you get a lot more bang for your buck out of snails.

Orion-you got rid of your Engineer? How sad! I have one in my 55 (the same one I have had for years) and he has settled on one little home and cleans it every once in a while but the substrate is a fine aragonite so don't have the constant dust storm. IMHO the worst thing for display tanks and I hate seeing them in captivity are Cleaner Wrasses. Those are my pet peeve.

The Denizens up here took the Engineer, and put her in the display tak up here. So, we get to see her all the time, and know she's doing really well. She's over 12 inches long now, and she just wouldn't quit digging in the sand when we moved everyone into the 120. For 3 weeks, we went through about $300 worth of filter floss trying to reduce the clouding enough to be able to see more than 1/2 into the tank without much success. The filters were completely clogged within about 4 hours!
