How Much Water?

I dose for the water volume, not the tank volume. No way to tell--it all depends on the quantity of other stuff. One of my 55's has about 49 gallons in it--very thin layer of sand, only a few rocks and wood, while the other one has about 42-43 gallons in it--thicker substrate, big piles of wood and rock. My 40 had a bit less than 30 gallons of water in it--very thick gravel layer, with rocks and wood all over the place.

From what I remember when I first filled it, I put about 43-45 gallons of water in. After reading your amounts that sounds about right.I have 1.5-2 inches of gravel, rocks and 2 pieces of driftwood. Thanks, cause I wasn't sure if I should go by tank volume or what.

The best way to figure this out (although it is probably too late right now) is to fill the tank with buckets of a known volume to the desired height in the tank. That way you know the actual amount of water you added to the tank. You could also not the height of the water column at various volumes so that you know how much water to add for 20g or 30g or 50g (you get the idea) when you are not using buckets. Also, when I need to dose meds I drop the water level in my tank so that I would not have to use as much medication (in this case 38g tank was only holding 20g when meds were applied).
