I just got back from Petco and have to vent. :mad2: There were two tanks that had two very dead plecos. One was wrapped up totally in some kind of white mucous looking stuff like a mummy. The other was almost down to the bone. I told the young man in the aquarium dept. who was stocking shelves that I did not want to appear a busy-body, but the dead plecos were disgusting and I didn't think anyone would want to buy any fish with those things in there. I sure didn't. He looked at me like I had two heads and said he would check. I went to get cat food and looked at lights and other stuff, 20 minutes later he still had not removed the bodies. I know that Petco gets their fish in on Thursday nights. How can you put new fish in a tank and totally ignore the carcasses already in there? I doubt very seriously I will ever go back there for fish. Petsmart is not much better. Surprisingly, Walmart has pristine tanks. Go figure.

quality in places like petco and petsmart can be pretty bad, depending on who they hire. since these stores are chains, with most of the management in other places, the people hire whoever is available. also since the fish section is probably where they get the smallest prophit from, they dont want to spend much money there, so they hire crappy service and hope they break even. It may be sad, but at least they dont treat their dogs and cats and hamsters the same way.
also, if you just stop going there, they probley wont notice, like i said, they dont get much of a prophit off of the fish, compared to all of their other sections, but if you were to find the manager (probley in a back office) of the store the next time that somebody just blows you off like that, then some action might be taken.

You are very right Lobo, they probably don't care if I ever came back, which is why I didn't fool with the manager. I just hate to see any of God's creatures treated so poorly.

that is gross and sad. i went to petco on monday and saw 3 tanks with dead fish in them. and they had been dead for awhile...i just went by there today to pick up filters and the dead fish were still there. when they first opened their tanks were very clean and the fish were healthy. i even bought fish from there a couple times. but with disasterous results, none of the fish i bought survived very long. now i only buy supplies from there when i have to.

Some of the BIG, so called LFS's are so BAD it beggar's belief!!!

I just started with Cichlid and i have too say i hate them (The LFS'S that is!!!)............ AND......that's and understatement!!!

I live in Glasgow and our biggest one here, (Where i live, apart from P.R.West, is now called "Pet's at home"?).

Don't get me wrong, we have "GOOD", Fish store's here (Clean tank, no disease), but the MOST common Cichlid's.....the same( ONE'S....... ALL THE TIME!! l!!)

I had to travel 160 mile's today to go to Cupar, in FIFE! to get:

1. Rusty 1M, 2F
2. ?? Yellow tailed violet??
3. Electric blue X2
4. Lab "Yellow back"!!! x 4

Sara, your tank pictures are BEAUTIFUL. I know you are excited about your new fish even though you had to drive so far to get them! Thanks for sharing something positive after my depressing day!

i went to my LFS the other day, and see half a fish body in there. and a few months ago, i see a guppy tank, with 20 dead! :mad2: and the bad thing is, their the only non-chain store around. :help:

but on the good side, they put puffers and fish that breed into the plant tanks to look pretty! :D they have tons of variations of livebeares, specially platies and swordtails. and i saw a guy in there not too long ago, who looked 100% like willy wonka! I AM SERIOUS! i asked him" where are your oompaloompas?" i started laughin crazily!

He he.....what did he say?

Well....I have to say I have a very good PetCo in my area, they aren't all bad. Just about every time I go in that store this one fella is almost always cleaning out the tanks. I like to see this and went up to him and complemented him on what a great job he was doing keeping those tanks nice and tidy. They are all nice and clean, though occasionally, with all those tanks to clean he does miss a dead one here and there...but that seems to be the exception here and not the rule.

Having said that...it's also the place where I picked up my rams that had the nematodes....so, even a place that is good about keeping tanks clean, will also have problems. When you deal in that many fish coming and going all the time I guess it's hard to keep on top of everything.

The PetSmart on the other hand....lol...not quite as good with the tanks, but not as bad as some places I've been to. I'm pretty blessed to have a plethera of LFSs in my area....there are like zillions of them, I havn't even been to a quarter of them...lol...

I live near Hartford, CT :D
