i have 2 blackskirt tetras that are pretty old... I am the third owner, but going back to the first, I can account for at least 5 1/2 years, could be more depending on how old they were when purchased.

One of the blackskirts is looking terrible, his body seems to be shrinking, his fins are tattered, he hides quite a bit, doesn't eat as much as before, and generally just floats around the tank. Everytime I walk by the tank I expect him to be dead, but he's been hanging in there like this all week. I would quarantine, but I wouldn't know what to treat for, and if it is just old age, as I suspect it is, I don't want to cause more stress to him than need be.

so i'm just wondering, what happens when fish die of old age? If you were me, would you just let the poor guy die in peace in his tank, or try to quarantine and treat?

I also have six black skirts, four are also very ancient. I would hate to quarentine the old guy as they do like to stay in groups. I would though if any of the other fish start picking on him.

hmmm... you make a good point, my other (healthier) blackskirt is picking on the sickly one quite a bit. Maybe I will try to quarantine after all...
