Hi! I just wanted to say that I really enjoy reading all advice on this site...very helpful!

I have an odd question...I have had a Juli Cory named "Cory" alone in the same 20 gallon tank (with tetras and bumblebee gobies on and off) for the last 8 years. He was very active until earlier this year...dashing to the top, roaming for food, rolling his eyes at the gobies who will perch on his head at any given moment (they are the "little kings" of the tank). In the last few weeks I have noticed that he just hangs out at the bottom corners throughout the day and I don't see him looking for his pellets like he used to--but the shrimp pellet is usually gone in the morning.

His color is excellent and he is about 2 inches long and not skinny at all. No signs of disease or swimming funny. All in all, I wouldn't think that he has a problem, but I noticed the lack of activity lately.

Does anyone know if this is just old age setting in?? All the other fish and plants (the gobies and tetras) seem to be thriving as I have a heavily planted tank. The temperature is kept at 76-77 degrees, PH is a little high at 7.2-but stays there all the time, salt is added with water changes once a week, Ammonia is (and has) been at 0 for years.

How long do these guys live and could the gobies be adding stress to the Cory by being "around" the bottom of the tank? They do not compete for food as the gobies only take live or frozen. I also have another 30 gallon that I can move him too if needed, but I think it may just be that he's slowing down due to age??? Anyone else have an elder catfish??? Or advise???

I guess hes been a loner all these years, but if you have the room, maybe you could get him a few friends! Then if its just old age, maybe the company would spunk him up a little!!!

8 years? Yes, personally I think he is slowing down a little. I wouldn't add new cory, at his age, it might be best to leave things as they have always been. It might stress him to see youngsters around...I don't know. I'm not an old cory, I'm just an old lady :)

Is 8 years really old for a Cory though? I have heard some fish live 15-20 years...I just didn't know if anyone had an older one out there??? Maybe I could get a prize for having the oldest in capitivity??

P.S. He is really good-looking...if I was a young lady catfish...LOL

I really don't know. I think the lifespan is 5 to 7 years or so. Someone put up a list of average fish lifespans and I can't remember the link, but I think most tropicals were in the 5 to 7 year range.
Cold water fish like goldies and loaches are up to 10 years, as I understand it.
Congratulations to you :)

Sorry I never had a cory that old so i can;t say anything to that one, But,
Isn;t Bumblebee gobies stickly a Brackish fish? Hence the On and Off for 8 Years.....meaning they die right?
I'm pretty sure they are as I heard this awhile back in another forum and chat I visit regularly, I didn;t know they were, and almost picked up a couple for my f/w community tank untell I heard it.

Cory has new buddies...

I would like to thank Holly & Swimfins for their advise. I did allot of thinking and my old cory cat was getting more and more inactive these past few weeks, so I bought him 4 buddies and moved them all (after they were in QT) to the 40G tank last night.

HE WAS LITERALLY DOING A HAPPY DANCE! He hasn't stopped swimming with the others...even if he is bigger/older then them. Right now they are all together taking a little rest on some flat rocks...having a little school of these guys makes me wonder why anyone would want other fish?? :)

Thanks for the information!
