planning on gettin a new 25 or 30 gallon tank. i want to use sand as a substrate. what kind of sand could i use that is safe for a tank, and that plants could grow from
Sand is not the best medium for plants to grow in. (It contains no fertilizer) But, if you put down a first layer, such as laterite, then your sand, and don't siphon too deep when cleaning, it can work. I did it once, and had 2 Amazon swordplants that quickly outgrew the tank. Deep rooting plants like valseneria did well in this substrate.
Or you can mix the sand with flourite or profile aquatic soil (available at home depot). The flourite is expensive. The profile is good and alot cheaper.
You can also check out what type of plants MIGHT be able to do stand on www.plantgeek.com it's a good site for just Plants in general. But I would go with Swimfins suggestions since I'm about to do the same thing in my 90 Gal. you could also try a partial sand and partial gravle mix.
For example have a row in back of all gravel for the plants to grow on then do Sand in the foreground.
